4 days Rwenzori Mountain trekking
Day 1: Depart from Nyakalengija (1650m) and hike to Nyabitaba camp (2650m).
Begin the 4 days Rwenzori Mountain trekking by promptly contacting the Rwenzori climbing reservation manager in the morning to procure necessary equipment and quickly organize for guides, cooks, and porters. The 4 days Rwenzori Mountain trekking commences at the park gates and covers a distance of 7 kilometers, taking around 5 to 6 hours to complete. The ascent throughout this hike is 1200 meters.
The initial track traverses residential areas and agricultural fields, gradually transitioning into areas of tall elephant grass and thick vegetation. You will scale high cliffs and bluffs, cross the river Mahoma, and then continue to ascend steeply until you reach Nyabitaba camp. Notable animals that can be observed include the white and black colobus monkeys, three-horned chameleon, and Rwenzori Turaco birds.
Experience an overnight stay at the Nyabitaba camp.
On the second day of 4 days Rwenzori Mountain trekking, we will go from Nyabitaba at an elevation of 2650 meters to Johnmaate camp at 3505 meters, where we will have a hot lunch. Afterward, we will continue our hike to Bujuku camp at an elevation of 3900 meters.
An evening meal followed by a stay for the night From Nyabitaba, you will descend to your right and follow the trail that descends through the forest for around thirty minutes until you reach the Kurt Shafer bridge. This bridge is located just before the point where the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers meet.
After a few hours, the trek becomes effortless as it passes through the bamboo forest. However, it gradually becomes more challenging, resembling spelunking, as you go over a lengthy and tiring section of rocks covered in slippery moss. Mount Stanley and Speke are visible from the Nyamileju rock shelter, prior to entering the area characterized by the presence of the big Heather, lobelia, and groundsel. After traversing the exhausting bog, we finally arrived at Johnmate camp to enjoy a warm meal. While at this location, there is a good likelihood of witnessing the impressive sights of Mount Stanley and Margherita Glacier. Following a brief lunch, continue your trek towards Bujuku camp to have dinner and spend the night.
Hike from Bujuku camp at an altitude of 3900m to reach the summit of Margharita Peak.
On the third day of 4 days Rwenzori Mountain trekking, we will hike from Bujuku camp at an altitude of 3900m to reach the summit of Margharita Peak. After reaching the summit, we will travel back to Johnmaate camp.
The trail descends from Bujuku camp to Irene Junction and goes into the lower Irene bog, which is inhabited by large lobelias. Moving from one tussock to another, the bog is eventually crossed, although not without its feet experiencing the freezing ooze. Continuing towards the upper Irene rocks, you will follow the Irene River, which occasionally flows underground from Lake Irene. Along the way, you will enjoy views of Mount Baker to the South and Mount Stanley to the West. The route extends to the Margharita Glacier, reaching an elevation of 4541m. The hike from Bujuku to Margharita Peak takes approximately 5 hours. After capturing some photographs, return to Johnmaate for a meal and spend the night there.
On the fourth day of 4 days Rwenzori Mountain trekking, we will hike from Johnmaate camp at an altitude of 3505m to Nyabitaba camp at an altitude of 2560m. We will have lunch at Nyabitaba camp and then continue our descent to Nyakalengija, where we will transfer to our next destination.
The descent to Nyabitaba typically requires approximately 6-7 hours. However, by commencing the journey early, it is feasible to reach Nyakalengija in a single day. Johnmaate is situated below the road where the descent begins from the cliffs of Nyamileju. This route will guide you through the Heather Forest zones until you reach Nyabitaba. At Nyabitaba, you have the option to have dinner and stay overnight, or have lunch and continue your journey down to Nyakalengija, where you can enjoy hot showers.
